Make a Difference: How You Can Help Homeless Animals
Share
The overwhelming number of homeless animals is a heartbreaking reality. But the good news is, there are countless ways to help these furry friends in need. Even small actions can make a big difference.
Many animals are unhoused with their people who love them. It's important to understand that many people who are unhoused take better care of their animals than they do of themselves. Judging someone who is unhoused by saying that they shouldn't have animals they cannot afford does not help anyone. These animals would not be served any better by being in a shelter. When they are able to stay with their owners they are loved and cared for. So how can you help these animals?
Help their people
- Donate to local food pantries for humans and animals.
- Talk to your representatives about breed restrictions in housing and affordable housing.
- Say hi to the person.
- Ask if there are supplies that could be helpful.
- If you have a local "mini" pantry (like a little free library but for food), include some pet items.
"A 2016 study entitled “No Pets Allowed: Discrimination, Homelessness, and Pet Ownership” identified the most common problems houseless folks face. One of those was bias against unhoused people owning pets. Bias or prejudice manifests in different ways, such as calling animal control on folks on the street, according to the report." - Pets of the Homeless

Volunteer Your Time
Local animal shelters and rescues are always in need of dedicated volunteers. Here are some ways you can help:
- Spend time with animals: Playing with and even reading to shelter pets can help reduce their stress and make them more adoptable.
- Assist with kennel cleaning: Keeping the shelter clean is essential for the animals' health and well-being.
- Help with adoption events: Promote adoptable pets and assist potential adopters.
- Provide transportation: Help transport animals to and from vet appointments or foster homes.
- Foster: Fostering allows people to learn what the pet is really like in a home. The shelter can be a scary place, pets there do not always act their best. They are also more likely to get sick. Every pet that is not in the physical shelter, reduces the burden on the already overwhelmed staff.
Donate Supplies
Shelters are constantly in need of supplies. Consider donating:
- Food (both wet and dry)
- Litter
- Cleaning supplies
- Toys
- Blankets
- Towels
Many shelters have wish lists on their websites, so you can see exactly what they need.
Adopt a Pet
The most impactful way to help homeless animals is to adopt one. Shelters are filled with loving and adoptable pets waiting for their chance at a happy life.
Support Your Local Shelter
Consider making a monetary donation to your local animal shelter. These funds help cover the costs of food, medical care, and shelter maintenance.
Spread Awareness
Use your social media platforms to share information about homeless animals and promote adoption. Encourage your friends and family to support local shelters and rescues.
Be sure your pet has up to date ID
The fastest way pets get returned to owners is by accurate collar/tag info. Microchips also work great too! If your pets is lost and quickly returned, it means another space is available for a pet who needs the shelter.
Spay and Neuter Your Pets
This simple act helps reduce the number of unwanted animals entering shelters.
Remember, every little bit helps. By taking even one of these actions, you can make a positive impact on the lives of homeless animals in your community.
