If you spend time outdoors with your dog, you know how quickly standard gear deteriorates. Traditional nylon webbing acts like a sponge, absorbing swamp water, dirt, and bacteria. Leather looks classic, but repeated soaking makes it brittle and cracked.
At Ulti-Mutt Toys, we handcraft our leashes, collars, and long lines using genuine BioThane webbing. Here is a look at what this material is made of and why it outperforms traditional textiles on the trail, at the beach, and in training.
The Engineering: What BioThane Is Made Of
BioThane is a specialized coated webbing manufactured in the United States by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It consists of an internal polyester webbing core fully encapsulated by a protective polymer coating (either polyurethane or PVC). This isn't like many "waterproof" leashes and collars that are nylon thats been coated in a silicone type material. Silicone coating will still absorb water, mols, fade, chip and stretch.
The webbing core in Biothane provides tensile strength, while the exterior coating provides a completely sealed barrier against moisture, UV rays, and abrasion.
The specific line we use in our gear is called Beta 520. Beta has a matte, leather-like finish with an embossed grain. It stays pliable in freezing weather, feels soft in the hand, and eliminates the rough edges that cause leash burn when a dog pulls. It also comes in dozens of rich colors.
Why BioThane Outperforms Nylon and Leather
1. 100% Non-Porous and Waterproof
Standard woven webbing holds moisture in its fibers. This damp environment allows bacteria and mold to multiply, creating the lingering "wet dog" smell on your gear and even worse mold. Because BioThane is non-porous, water rolls off the surface. It does not gain water weight during rainstorms or lake swims, and it never develops mildew.
2. Immediate 30-Second Cleanup
Cleaning woven or bylon gear means washing it in the machine and trying desperately to get it fully dry before it starts to smell. Cleaning BioThane requires only warm water and basic dish soap. Wipe it with a towel, and it is instantly dry and ready for the next walk. If you working in a kennel situation or Vetmed, it can also be disinfected with a detergent like Rescue. Biothane will not deteriorate even with repeated exposures.
3. High Tensile Strength and Safety Ratings
BioThane was originally developed for use with horses, where materials must withstand thousands of pounds of force. According to manufacturer engineering specifications, standard 0.75-inch Beta webbing has a break strength of 750 pounds, while 1-inch webbing holds up to 1,000 pounds.

4. Zero Sizing Stretch or Cold-Weather Stiffness
Nylon expands when wet, causing collar prongs to loosen. Leather hardens and cracks when exposed to road salts, freezing temperatures, and mud. BioThane maintains its exact dimensions and flexibility from -20°F up to 120°F.
