The "Holy Grail" of dog training is the reliable recall. There is no better feeling than watching your dog sprint through an open field and come charging back the moment you call their name. But getting from a 6-foot leash to total off-leash freedom is a massive leap—one that often leads to frustration if you move too fast.
That’s where the Long Line comes in.
At Ulti-Mutt Toys, we view the long line as the "training wheels" for off-leash life. It provides the safety of a physical connection while giving your dog the psychological feeling of being "at liberty." Here is how to use a long line to teach, test, and bulletproof your dog’s recall.
1. Teach: Building the Association
When you are first teaching a recall, the long line ensures that your dog never learns they can ignore you. If you call your dog and they decide to sniff a blade of grass instead, you have the ability to gently guide them toward you.
-
The Technique: Start with your dog on a 15ft or 30ft BioThane® line. Give them space to explore. Call their name and your recall cue (e.g., "Come!").
-
The Reward: The moment they turn toward you, start backing up and making yourself exciting! When they reach you, deliver a high-value reward—like a session with an Ulti-Mutt Tug Toy or a handful of premium treats.
-
The Safety Check: Always attach your long line to a back-clip harness to prevent injury if your dog hits the end of the line at a run. For other safety considerations check out our blog post here.
2. Test: Adding Distance and Distraction
Once your dog is returning consistently from 10 feet away, it’s time to test their commitment. The long line allows you to add distance without adding risk.
-
Increasing the Stakes: Gradually let out more of the line. If you’re using a 50ft line, you can test if your dog will still choose you over a tempting scent 40 feet away.
-
Proofing: Go to a park with moderate distractions—birds, other people, or new smells. If your dog fails to respond to the cue, you still have the line to prevent them from "self-rewarding" by running off to investigate the distraction.
-
BioThane® Advantage: Unlike nylon, which gets snagged on every twig and root, BioThane® slides effortlessly over terrain, meaning the "test" isn't ruined by the leash getting stuck.
3. Improve: Creating a "Hands-Free" Feel
The final stage of recall training is making the dog forget the leash is there. This is where the long line truly shines.
-
Dropping the Line: Once your dog is 95% reliable, let the long line trail on the ground behind them. This is called "dragging the line." It allows the dog to feel completely free, but gives you an "emergency brake" you can step on if they suddenly decide to bolt.
-
Clean and Easy: This is why we exclusively use BioThane® for our training lines. A dragging nylon leash becomes a heavy, mud-soaked, burr-covered mess. A BioThane® line stays lightweight and can be wiped clean in seconds, making it the only practical choice for "dragging" during recall practice.
The Path to Off-Leash Success
A reliable recall isn't built overnight—it’s built through successful repetitions. By using a long line, you eliminate the possibility of your dog "practicing" the act of running away. You are setting them up for a lifetime of wins.
Whether you're working in your local park or out on a hiking trail, a durable long line is the bridge between a dog that has to stay with you and a dog that wants to stay with you.
